Suffa and France: Sofas Made in Portugal Since 2012

You may already have a Suffa sofa in your home without even knowing it. Since 2012, our factory in Lordelo, near Porto, has manufactured sofas for some of France’s leading buying groups and furniture retailers, sold under their own names. Today, we put our own name on our sofas and present them directly to you.

A Family Story, More Than 40 Years of Expertise

Suffa was founded in 2010 in Lordelo, in the Paredes region, at the heart of Portugal’s furniture industry. Its founder already had more than 30 years of experience in upholstery. In 2012, his son André Fernandes, now Managing Director, joined the company and led its expansion into export markets, starting with France.

One of the Leading Private-Label Sofa Suppliers to France

For twelve years, we worked exclusively for export markets, manufacturing sofas under private label. France was our first market: fixed sofas, reclining sofas, corner sofas and sofa beds, supplied to buying groups and sold in stores under other brands. In 2024, almost 94% of our production was exported.

This demanding work taught us how to manufacture at scale without compromising on quality and how to meet the precise expectations of French buyers. Today, our factory produces around 10,000 sofas and armchairs a year, with a team of 55 people.

55 kg/m³ Foam, a Standard We Were Among the First to Adopt

Foam density plays a major role in determining whether a sofa retains its shape or begins to sag after a few years. We were among the first manufacturers to offer high-resilience 55 kg/m³ foam seats on sofas for large-scale retail at a time when commonly used densities were much lower.

It remains our standard today: Suffa seats combine 55 kg/m³ HR foam with NOSAG spring suspension for lasting comfort.

Today, Our Own Brand

In 2024, after twelve years of private-label manufacturing, we opened our own stores: first in Lisbon, on Rua Castilho, followed by Aveiro, Johannesburg and our factory showroom in Paredes. The same factory, the same teams and the same standards, but now with our own collections: more than 60 models, made to order and customisable in dimensions, configuration, comfort and upholstery. Our leathers are 100% Italian.

Design, Our Signature

For years, our sofas carried other companies’ names. Today, every Suffa model reflects our own approach: clean lines, balanced proportions and details that are noticed through touch rather than at first glance.

Our collections are designed by our own team and by renowned designers, several of whom have strong links to France. French designer Rémi Bouhaniche, trained at ESADSE in Saint-Étienne, created the Colina, a modular sofa with rounded lines inspired by natural landscapes, set on a wooden base. Gonçalo Campos, who has worked with Pierre Frey and Zanotta, designed the Labelle, with its enveloping backrest and visible stitching, which can incorporate a decorative tray at the end of the sofa. Italian architect Stefano Bonavita designed the Milano, a corner sofa with straight lines, wooden details and a button-tufted backrest. French studio Joly Design and Franco-Portuguese designer Christophe de Sousa complete this family.

Alongside these signature pieces, our team creates models designed for everyday living: the Ginzo and Alexandrina with their rounded forms, the Joly with its distinctive armrests and refined stitching, and the Lady with its slim arms. Discover all our designers.

Innovation, Inside Every Sofa

A Suffa sofa is also defined by what you cannot see. Twelve years of manufacturing for demanding buyers taught us how to integrate technology without compromising the design:

  • Sofa Relax. Our electric reclining sofas, such as the [Olimpia] or [Porto], can be fitted with a rechargeable battery, so there is no need for a nearby power socket.
  • Adjustable headrests, manual or electric, for reading, watching a film or relaxing in the right position.
  • Discreet integrated USB ports, allowing you to charge your phone or tablet without visible cables.
  • Adaptive seating. The adjustable backrest on the Colina changes the seat depth, while the sliding seats on the Tatiana extend it for lounging.
  • Quick-opening sofa beds. The bed opens without removing the cushions and can accommodate a mattress up to 13 cm thick.
  • Easy-care fabrics. Aquaclean stain-resistant fabrics that can be cleaned with water, as well as pet-friendly fabrics.
  • Modularity. The Colina, Labelle and Marco can be configured and reconfigured to suit your space.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long has Suffa been working with France?

Since 2012. France was our first export market.

Did Suffa manufacture sofas for French brands?

Yes. For twelve years, we manufactured private-label sofas for French buying groups and furniture retailers.

Why is 55 kg/m³ foam important?

The higher the foam density, the better its resistance to sagging. A 55 kg/m³ seat retains its comfort for much longer than lower-density foam.

Where can I see Suffa sofas?

At our stores in Portugal, in Lisbon, Aveiro and Paredes, where our factory is located. If you are in France, we can send you samples.
