High-density foams: the invisible ingredient of real comfort

Of all a sofa's technical features, foam density is probably the most decisive for long-term durability and comfort — and the least visible. This article explains what it means and why it should always be among your evaluation criteria.

What foam density is

Foam density is measured in kg/m³ and indicates the amount of material per volume. Higher density doesn't necessarily mean firmer; it means more material per volume, which translates into greater resistance to compression over time.

Densities by quality level

18–25 kg/m³ foams: entry level, low durability. 25–35 kg/m³: mid range, medium durability. 50 kg/m³: premium range, long durability.

Firmness vs. density: a common confusion

They are independent concepts. A foam can be dense and soft, or dense and firm. Firmness is a personal preference; density is an objective quality criterion. At Suffa, you can choose your firmness within premium densities.

Different zones in the same sofa

The best sofas use foams of different densities and firmness in different areas: firmer in the seat (support), softer in the back (comfort) and denser in the arms (durability). This differentiation is a sign of quality construction.

How to test without a technical sheet

Press the seat with your open hand and release quickly. Quality foam recovers its shape in under 3 seconds. Sit down and stand up: the sofa should recover completely after each use.

The foam you can't see is often what you feel most after a few years of use. Knowing this technical detail is the difference between a good buy and a regrettable one.
