Sofas that last longer! Learn how to recognize them.

Finding the perfect sofa is difficult (but not impossible, contact us if you need help). It has to be comfortable, elegant, fit our style and home decor, have the right dimensions, among many other things. For these reasons, when we find that elusive unicorn that is the perfect sofa, we want it to be a lifelong partner. In this guide, we will tell you what to look out for when you are on the journey of buying a sofa, to ensure you will have your sofa for many years.

1. Frame, Frame, Frame

The sofa frame is its foundation, and if it's not strong, the sofa can never last long. For this, a durable sofa must have a strong frame. There are usually three types of sofa frames:

  • Solid wood frame: These are considered the gold standard. Denser woods, like oak, are sturdy and resistant to cracks and moisture. It is an excellent choice for a long-lasting sofa.
  • Plywood frame: Plywood is often used as a more economical alternative to solid wood, but not necessarily inferior. Quality plywood is very resilient and resistant to warping.
  • Particle board frames: This is the least resistant option. Avoid sofas with particle board frames, as they are susceptible to damage and do not usually last long compared to the previous alternatives.

2. Upholstery: Leather and fabric

The types of upholstery covering play an important role in the lifespan of a sofa. Here are some important considerations:

  • Leather: Genuine leather sofas are known for their durability and timeless appeal. They age beautifully and often improve with years. High-quality leather can last for decades with proper care.
  • Natural fabrics: When it comes to choosing durable and long-lasting sofa upholstery, natural fabrics can be an excellent choice. Fabrics like linen and cotton not only offer comfort, but also durability and a touch of timeless elegance. Here are some natural fabric options for sofas.
  • Synthetic blends: Many sofas use synthetic fabric blends. While they can be economical, quality can vary significantly. For increased longevity, look for high-density, tighter-weave fabrics.

3. Cushion construction

In addition to affecting comfort, the construction of the sofa cushions also affects the longevity of the sofa itself. When looking for a sofa, keep these considerations in mind:

  • High-density foam: Sofas with high-density foam cushions tend to maintain their shape and support for a longer period.
  • Feather-filled cushions: Down-filled cushions are luxuriously comfortable, but need to be fluffed regularly and may show signs of wear over time.
  • Spring cushions: These cushions contain a network of coils, providing support and durability. They help maintain the cushion's shape over time, but if abused, they can damage the cushion.

4. Coil springs vs. Zig Zag springs

If you have opted for a sofa with springs, pay attention to the type of springs used in the sofa:

  • Coil springs: These are individually coiled springs that provide excellent support and durability. If you are looking for a spring sofa, try to opt for one with coil springs, if possible.
  • Zig Zag springs: These are thinner (appear as wires) S-shaped springs, cheaper, but do not provide the same level of support or longevity as coil springs.

A sofa that lasts many years is an investment. When selecting a sofa, pay close attention to the quality of the frame, the upholstery covering, the cushion construction, and the overall quality of the piece. However, if you truly want a "lifelong" sofa, regular maintenance and care will contribute immensely. With the right choice and proper care, your sofa can provide comfort and style for a long time.
