Sofas that last longer! Learn how to recognize them.

Finding the perfect sofa is difficult (but not impossible; contact us if you need help). It has to be comfortable, stylish, fit our style and home decor, have the right dimensions, among many other things. For these reasons, when we find that elusive unicorn that is the perfect sofa, we want it to be a partner for life. In this guide, we'll tell you what you should look out for when you're on the journey of buying a sofa, to make sure you have your sofa for many years.

1. Structure, Structure, Structure

The sofa's frame is its foundation, and if you're not strong, the sofa will never last long. Therefore, a durable sofa needs a strong frame. There are typically three types of sofa frames:

  • Solid wood frame: These are considered the gold standard. Denser woods, such as oak, are robust and resistant to cracking and moisture. It's an excellent choice for a long-lasting sofa.
  • Plywood structure: Plywood is often used as a more economical alternative to solid wood, but not necessarily an inferior one. Quality plywood is very resilient and resistant to warping.
  • Particleboard frames: This is the least durable option. Avoid sofas with particleboard frames, as they are susceptible to damage and don't tend to last as long as the previous alternatives.

2. Upholstery: Leather and fabric

The types of upholstery used play an important role in the lifespan of a sofa. Here are some important considerations:

  • Leather: Genuine leather sofas are known for their durability and timeless appeal. They age beautifully and often improve with age. High-quality leather can last for decades with proper care.
  • Natural fabrics: When it comes to choosing durable, long-lasting upholstery for sofas, natural fabrics can be an excellent choice. Fabrics like linen and cotton offer not only comfort but also durability and a touch of timeless elegance. Here are some natural fabric options for sofas.
  • Synthetic blends: Many sofas use blends of synthetic fabrics. While they can be economical, the quality can vary significantly. For greater longevity, look for high-density fabrics with a tighter weave.

3. Cushion construction

In addition to affecting comfort, the construction of sofa cushions also affects the longevity of the sofa itself. When you are looking for a sofa, keep these considerations in mind:

  • High-density foam: Sofas with high-density foam cushions tend to maintain their shape and support for a longer period.
  • Feather-filled pillows: Pillows filled with down are luxuriously comfortable, but they need to be fluffed regularly and may show signs of wear over time.
  • Spring cushions: These cushions contain a network of coils, providing support and durability. They help maintain the cushion's shape over time, but if subjected to misuse, they can cause damage to the cushion.

4. Helical Springs vs. Zigzag Springs

If you've decided on a sofa with springs, pay attention to the type of springs used in the sofa:

  • Helical springs: These are individually coiled springs that provide excellent support and durability. If you are looking for a spring sofa, try to opt, if possible, for one with helical springs.
  • Zigzag springs: These are thinner (appearing like wires) S-shaped springs, cheaper, but they do not provide the same level of support or longevity as helical springs.

A sofa that lasts for many years is an investment. When selecting a sofa, pay close attention to the quality of the frame, the upholstery, the cushions, and the overall construction quality of the piece. However, if you truly want a sofa "for life," regular maintenance and care will contribute immensely. With the right choice and proper care, your sofa can provide comfort and style for a long time.
